Courses & Study Pathways

Every level of study we place students into — from English preparation through to doctoral research — and what it takes to get onto each one.

Start Where You Are

There Is More Than One Way In

Most Bhutanese students assume a bachelor’s degree is the only option. It is not. A certificate or diploma can be faster, cheaper and credited toward a degree later — and for some profiles it is the more realistic route. Here is the full ladder.

01

English Preparation

Typical duration
4–48 weeks
Usual entry requirement
Placement test

Intensive English before your main course. Used when your score falls just short of the entry requirement, or to settle in before degree study begins.

02

Certificate I–IV

Typical duration
3–18 months
Usual entry requirement
Class 12 / BHSEC or equivalent

Short, hands-on vocational qualifications. The quickest route into a trade or a support role, and a common stepping stone into a diploma.

03

Diploma

Typical duration
1–2 years
Usual entry requirement
Class 12 / BHSEC

Practical qualifications with strong industry links. Often credited toward a bachelor’s degree, so you can start here and articulate upward later.

Advanced Diploma

Typical duration
1.5–2 years
Usual entry requirement
Diploma or relevant experience

A step above diploma, with supervisory and specialist content. Frequently gives one to two years of credit toward a bachelor’s degree.

05

Bachelor's Degree

Typical duration
3–4 years
Usual entry requirement
BHSEC with required subjects and grades

The main undergraduate qualification, and the most common choice for Bhutanese students going abroad straight after school.

Popular fields

06

Graduate Certificate / Diploma

Typical duration
6–12 months
Usual entry requirement
A completed bachelor's degree

Short postgraduate qualifications used to switch fields, meet the entry requirement for a master’s, or add a specialisation quickly.

Popular fields

07

Master's Degree

Typical duration
1–2 years
Usual entry requirement
Bachelor's degree; some require experience

Postgraduate specialisation. One-year options are common in the UK, while Australia, Canada and New Zealand are typically one and a half to two years.

Popular fields

08

Doctorate (PhD)

Typical duration
3–4 years
Usual entry requirement
Master's degree and a research proposal

Independent research leading to an original contribution in your field. Usually a supervisor must accept your proposal before you can apply.

Popular fields
Research across all disciplines
A note on level names. The names and durations above follow the Australian framework, which is the one most Bhutanese students meet first. New Zealand, Canada, the UK and Malta use their own equivalents, and durations vary between institutions. We will confirm the exact level, length and entry requirement for the specific course you are considering.

Where Do You Fit?

Which Level Is Right for You

Three starting points we see most often. Yours may sit between them — that is what the free counselling session is for.

You have just finished BHSEC or BCSE

A bachelor's degree is the usual route, but a diploma can be faster and cheaper and still credit toward a degree. Which one is realistic depends on your grades, your budget and the country you choose.

Bachelor's DegreeDiplomaCertificate I–IV

You already hold a bachelor's degree

A master's is the obvious step, but if your degree is in a different field or your grades are borderline, a graduate certificate can bridge you in and shorten the master's that follows.

Master's DegreeGraduate CertificateGraduate Diploma

You are working and want to move up

Work experience counts. Some master's and MBA programmes will accept it in place of grades, and advanced diplomas are built around people already in the industry.

Common Questions

Questions About Courses and Levels

Can I start with a diploma and move into a degree later?
Yes, and it is a route we recommend often. Many diplomas and advanced diplomas carry formal credit toward a bachelor's degree at partner institutions, which can shorten the degree by one to two years. It lowers your upfront cost and gives you a qualification in hand earlier. We will confirm the exact credit before you enrol, because it varies by institution.
Do I need an English test for every level?
No. The requirement depends on the level, the institution and your academic background — and some providers accept alternatives to IELTS or PTE, or accept a Medium of Instruction letter. Higher levels generally require higher scores. We confirm the exact requirement for your chosen course before you book any test.
How much credit will I get for study I have already completed in Bhutan?
It depends on what you studied, how recently, and the institution you are applying to. Each provider assesses this individually, sometimes subject by subject. Send us your transcripts and we will ask the institutions directly rather than guess.
Does the level I choose affect my options after I finish?
In several destinations, post-study work entitlements are linked to the level and length of the qualification you complete. The rules differ by country and change from time to time, so we will explain what currently applies to the specific course and country you are considering — and we will not promise an outcome that depends on an immigration decision.
